With a unique set of accomplishments as a leader in Army aviation and at NASA, Shane Kimbrough has experienced things most people can only dream of, but few have the bravery to pursue. Visiting his grandparents in Titusville, Florida as a young boy was enough to pique Kimbrough’s interest in space exploration. After graduating from West Point and becoming a leader in Army aviation in Operation Desert Storm, Shane’s accomplishments led him to be selected as an astronaut candidate.

The preparation for a spaceflight takes years and includes rigorous scientific and technical briefings, shuttle and space station instruction, physiological and psychological training, T-38 flight training, and water and wilderness survival training. Lessons in stress management, survival, and discipline happen well before an astronaut takes that famed walk out to their spacecraft.

From these experiences, Shane Kimbrough knows about goal setting, motivation, and follow-through. He has also dealt with the familial challenges of being far from home—farther than most husbands and fathers will ever be from their families.

This rigorous training is a setup for success in space and in life. In this address, Kimbrough shares tips and tools for success while showing inspiring images from his time in space that illustrate just how “worth it” following your dreams can be!

Audience takeaways:

  • Following dreams, setting goals, and perseverance
  • High-stakes problem-solving
  • Leadership vs. followership and the importance of teamwork
  • Isolation: how to handle and control conditions that go against our instincts and evolution
  • Searching for the next challenge
  • Mission first, safety always

With a front row seat of space comes a front row seat to the major technological advancements over the last two decades.

Shane Kimbrough is one of only four astronauts to have experienced three spaceflights and has spent several training years as the Chief of the Vehicle Integration Test Office and as Robotics Branch Chief for the Astronaut Office. That means he’s tested and experienced the changes in spacecraft technology from cockpit to exterior.

Kimbrough has flown in STS-126 (2008), Russian Soyuz MS-02 (2016-2017), and most recently NASA/SpaceX Crew-2 Dragon (2021) as Commander. Among his 388 days in space, he has also spent considerable time at the International Space Center making improvements and expending the station’s footprint. All the while, Kimbrough was performing scientific research to help us better understand the universe and improve our experience on Earth.

Suffice it to say that Shane Kimbrough offers audiences a unique perspective on innovation that few people get to learn about. If your audience would enjoy looking behind the closed doors of NASA and out into the universe, Shane Kimbrough is the best person to show you.

Audience takeaways:

  • The evolution of human space exploration
  • Experiencing and monitoring the International Space Station, the largest modular space station currently in low Earth orbit
  • Commercial space travel: educated predictions for the future

Biography

Shane Kimbrough was selected by NASA in 2004. He completed his first spaceflight in 2008 on STS-126, where he spent almost 16 days on the mission to expand the crew living quarters to accommodate a six-member crew on the International Space Station (ISS). He performed two spacewalks during this mission.  On his second spaceflight, Kimbrough launched to the ISS on the Russian Soyuz MS-02 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This mission lasted 173 days as part of Expeditions 49 and 50, where he performed four spacewalks and numerous science and maintenance activities. He most recently served as commander of the NASA/SpaceX Crew-2 Dragon spacecraft, which launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Once on the ISS, Kimbrough served as Flight Engineer of Expedition 65/66. He performed three spacewalks during the 199-day mission. Kimbrough now has a total of 388 days in space.
