If you’ve noticed, there is a revolution taking place in media, content, and the creator economy. This isn’t news to Netflix’s co-founder who has seen it once before — and ever since working with media startups like us at Coinage.
When Netflix’s first CEO Marc Randolph started mailing DVDs to people’s homes, the idea sounded absurd. “Everyone says that will never work because you’re doing something that hasn’t been done before,” he tells Coinage in this episode. “And if it was so obviously a great idea, it would have been done already.”
Now, nearly three decades later, Randolph sees a familiar pattern unfolding in the next frontier of storytelling. This time, it’s not about shipping movies through the mail — it’s about rebuilding media from the ground up through community ownership and decentralized creation.
“I think it’s a huge remaining unsolved problem,” he said. “This connection between distribution and creation.” Watch to learn why Marc became a Coinage co-owner by minting one of our first memberships — and how he thinks AI is going to increasingly accelerate changes that are already underway in media.
Marc Randolph is a veteran Silicon Valley entrepreneur, advisor, and investor. As co-founder and first CEO of Netflix, he laid much of the groundwork for a service that’s grown to over 200 million subscribers, and fundamentally altered how the world experiences media.
