Legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz returned to the spotlight this week as she installed a pop-up exhibition in New York celebrating the expanded edition of her iconic 1999 book, Women. The original project — inspired in part by Hillary Clinton’s 1995 “women’s rights are human rights” speech — profiled women across every corner of American life, from coal miners to Serena Williams.
The newly released volume adds a wide-ranging mix of modern figures, including a pregnant Rihanna, Greta Thunberg, Billie Eilish, and more. The signed edition has already sold out, underscoring renewed public appetite for Leibovitz’s work decades after the book first debuted.
The installation process itself was classic Leibovitz: hands-on, meticulous, and charged with her perfectionism. She fine-tuned projections, reworked image pacing, rehearsed her remarks, and revisited her memories of collaborator Susan Sontag, who wrote the original introduction while undergoing chemotherapy.
The opening night drew a crowd of cultural icons — from Martha Stewart to Gloria Steinem — as the exhibition brought the portraits to life in vivid scale. For Leibovitz, now 76, the project is both a continuation and a reinvention of a body of work that helped define her career.
