At the 2024 Aspen Cyber Summit, former FBI Director Christopher Wray detailed a successful joint operation that disrupted a botnet run by a Chinese government-linked hacker group known as Flax Typhoon and freed thousands of compromised internet-connected devices from its control. The group targeted a wide range of devices—including cameras, storage units, and recorders—to steal data from organizations across sectors. Wray revealed that the group’s true identity was an information security company whose leadership admitted to conducting intelligence activities for Chinese government agencies. He cautioned that this disruption is just one step in an ongoing fight against cyber threats from foreign adversaries and encouraged organizations to report attacks to the FBI to aid in response and recovery efforts.
