“America is mourning, once again, the senseless loss of life from mass shootings. At least 31 people were killed over the weekend in Texas and Ohio. They were students, young parents, grandmothers and grandfathers. Their lives were cut short while they shopped for school supplies or enjoyed a night out.
Any doctor, any person really, will tell you it is the preventable deaths that haunt you the most; lives lost needlessly, when they could’ve been saved. Despite similar rates of mental illness to many other developed countries, the United States has some of the highest rates of suicide and homicide. Both of these actions are more likely when there’s a firearm involved.
If we can’t stop the preventable deaths, if can’t get this part right, all of our other efforts toward treating the sickest patients lose meaning.”
