Could practising five daily habits in midlife save you from losing your mind through Alzheimer’s disease? That’s what Dr Sanjay Gupta, an American neurosurgeon, author and broadcaster, believes.
It’s a tantalising prospect. Four in ten Britons fear dementia more than anything else concerned with ageing, according to a survey by Alzheimer’s Research UK. Yet British experts have until recently argued that there is no proven way in which we can evade it. This month, however, a 36-year study from researchers at Oxford University and University College London, suggests that those who regularly exercise, eat healthily and quit smoking in midlife, can reduce risk of developing dementia later.
