Biography
Son of former coaching legend Mike Shanahan, Kyle Shanahan switched between various schools throughout his childhood depending on which team his dad was coaching for. Coaching is without question in Kyle’s blood. Before his coaching career began, Shanahan played wide receiver at the University of Texas at Austin. Over his college career with the Longhorns, he caught 14 passes for 127 yards.
Shanahan’s 20-year coaching career started as a graduate assistant to head coach Karl Dorrell at UCLA. He entered the NFL as an offensive coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before moving on to coach for the Houston Texans, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons and lastly San Francisco 49ers in 2017. Before taking on the head coach position with the 49ers, Shanahan led a top 10-ranked offense in 6 out of his 9 seasons as an offensive coordinator between 2008 and 2016. He was also named AP Assistant Coach of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America in 2016.
With the 49ers, Shanahan has led the team to three playoff runs, two division titles, three NFC Championship Games, and Super Bowl LIV, making him and his father the first father-son coaching duo to reach a Super Bowl. Shanahan’s experience learning from his father, coupled with the numerous coaching positions he has held, has provided him with invaluable insight into the world of football both on and off the field.
