Sir Alex Younger is the Former Chief (“C”) of the Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6. He served in this role for six years, from 2014 to 2020, and in 2019 became the longest-serving MI6 Chief in 50 years. He is an expert on international security, cybersecurity, and global conflicts, including those in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
Sir Alex joined MI6 in 1991 and was posted to Europe, the Middle East, and Afghanistan. He spent most of his career as an operational case officer. In 2009, he became Head of Counter-Terrorism, a role in which he was involved in security preparations for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
He was appointed the UK’s “C” in 2014. During his tenure, he focused on transforming the Service to ensure that technology became more of an advantage to MI6 than to its adversaries. He also maintained a global network of intelligence chiefs, spanning relationships from close allies to strategic adversaries. As Chief, he advised the Prime Minister on intelligence and security matters and served as a member of the National Security Council.
Prior to joining MI6, Sir Alex studied economics and computer science at St Andrew’s University and served as an infantry officer in the British Army (Scots Guards).
Today, his focus is on explaining the implications of geopolitical, geotechnological, and cyber competition to a wider audience. He believes that many of the trends he observed during his 30 years in the covert world are now shaping everyday life, giving him a distinct perspective on challenges that are increasingly shared across governments, businesses, and society.
