WWSG speaker and Axios senior media reporter Sara Fischer reports that the White House press pool will not provide a replacement television camera for President Trump’s trip to the United Nations General Assembly after CNN was prevented from fulfilling its scheduled pool duties. CNN is one of five major television networks—alongside CBS, NBC, Fox and ABC—that rotate responsibility for providing pooled video coverage of the president. With CNN unable to participate, the television pool said it would not substitute another network, meaning other journalists will continue covering the trip but without the usual pooled video feed.
The development comes amid a broader dispute between the Trump administration and several major news organizations. CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a First Amendment lawsuit after being denied White House access, while the White House has defended its restrictions. Fischer’s reporting highlights the wider implications of the conflict: the press pool provides an independent audiovisual record of presidential activity, and disruptions to that system can directly affect how the public sees and hears events involving the president.
Sara Fischer brings audiences an informed, fast-moving perspective on the forces reshaping media, technology, politics and communications. Drawing on her extensive reporting and industry relationships, she helps leaders understand how changes in the information ecosystem can affect businesses, institutions and public discourse.
