Rosie Rios, former U.S. Treasurer and chair of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, is leading the effort to make America’s 250th birthday a truly nationwide and inclusive celebration. Drawing on her own experience growing up as the daughter of Mexican immigrants and being inspired by the 1976 Bicentennial, Rios is focused on creating a moment that feels personal, accessible, and meaningful for all Americans—not just those in major cities.

Under her leadership, the America250 initiative emphasizes grassroots participation across all 50 states and territories, encouraging communities to celebrate in their own way while contributing to a larger national movement. With initiatives ranging from nationwide block parties and student programs to storytelling projects and civic engagement efforts, Rios is shaping the 250th anniversary as more than a single event—it’s a unifying, forward-looking experience designed to inspire the next generation and remind Americans that the future is theirs to build.

Rosie Rios is Chair of the United States Semiquincentennial (America250), the national commission planning the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026. She successfully leads the strategic vision and nationwide engagement efforts for this historic milestone.

She was the 43rd Treasurer of the United States, where she oversaw the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and the U.S. Mint, and initiated historic efforts to place a woman’s portrait on U.S. currency for the first time in over a century. She resigned from her position as Treasurer in July 2016 and received the Hamilton Award, the highest honor bestowed in the U.S. Department of the Treasury. At the time of her resignation, she was the longest serving Senate-confirmed Treasury official, which began with her time on the Treasury/Federal Reserve Transition Team in November 2008 at the height of the financial crisis.
