Ferguson contends that Brexit ultimately failed to deliver on its central promises of stronger economic growth and lower immigration. Instead, Britain experienced prolonged political instability, slower investment, labor shortages, and record levels of non-EU immigration. While Brexit has afforded the UK greater flexibility in areas such as vaccine procurement, artificial intelligence regulation, and foreign policy, these gains have fallen short of the transformative vision many supporters anticipated.
Looking ahead, Ferguson suggests that Britain’s future prosperity depends less on revisiting the Brexit debate and more on addressing deep-rooted domestic challenges, including outdated planning laws, healthcare pressures, welfare incentives, energy policy, and mounting fiscal strains. Above all, he argues that Britain’s enduring political dysfunction—not Europe itself—remains the country’s greatest obstacle to long-term renewal.
