Chatelaine of Highclere Castle Lady Carnarvon has a written a new book about life at the castle, and its history, entitled Seasons at Highclere.
The book shares an intimate look at the history and day-to-day running of Highclere Castle told first hand by Lady Carnarvon.
It guides readers through how the castle celebrates and prepares for each new season with a range of seasonal recipes, as well as stories from the table and grounds of Highclere, and much more.
Lady Carnarvon looks back at the castle’s Anglo-Saxon origins through 800 years as a medieval bishops’ palace through to the great Victorian and Edwardian gardens of the castle we know today.
Seasons at Highclere charts the history of Highclere Castle’s grounds and gardens in a unique fashion. From rooms with a view to the history of the iconic Cedars of Lebanon, it is full of anecdotes and recipes from family picnics to formal dinners in the great State Dining Room.
Lady Carnarvon said: “Having spent months of research in the archives as well as walking the ancient chalk downlands, the history of the gardens and landscape and their impact on the culinary life of the castle began to unfold for me.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed writing this book, from discovering hidden gems to gaining a deeper knowledge of the natural landscape and the ancient origins of farming here at Highclere, before bringing the stories back inside into the dining room with both family recipes and some of the Highclere chef’s beautiful dishes.”
The book will be published today (Thursday) by Century, an imprint of Penguin Random House, in hardback and eBook.
