Dr. Dave A. Chokshi has been appointed to the New York City Board of Health, returning to an institution he previously chaired while serving as the city’s 43rd Health Commissioner. Chokshi’s appointment was approved by the New York City Council on September 10, and he will serve the remainder of a six-year term through May 31, 2030.

Chokshi brings extensive experience in medicine, public health, and healthcare leadership to the role. As Health Commissioner during the COVID-19 pandemic, he led New York City’s vaccination campaign and helped shape testing and treatment strategies, school and economic reopenings, and other elements of the city’s pandemic response. Today, he continues to care for patients at Bellevue Hospital and serves as Sternberg Family Professor and Founding Director of the Health & Opportunity Leadership Institute at the City College of New York, as well as Chair of the Common Health Coalition.

With experience spanning frontline medicine, public health, government, and health policy, Dr. Chokshi brings audiences a distinctive perspective on building healthier communities and navigating complex challenges across the healthcare system. His insights are especially valuable for organizations exploring public health, healthcare leadership, health equity, prevention, and the future of care.
