Respiratory Illness Update: What’s Trending Now

Respiratory illness activity across the U.S. is beginning to shift as we move toward spring. Influenza-like illness is steadily declining, with doctor visits and severe cases dropping across all age groups—signaling that flu season is likely coming to a close.

COVID-19 remains at low levels nationwide, with minimal emergency department visits and declining wastewater activity. Most states are seeing continued decreases, and severe outcomes such as hospitalizations are also trending downward.

RSV activity, while still elevated, appears to have peaked in many areas. Early signs of improvement are emerging, particularly among young children, though hospitalization rates for infants remain higher than average.

At the same time, several other respiratory viruses—including human coronaviruses, metapneumovirus, and adenovirus—continue to circulate, contributing to ongoing cold and respiratory symptoms.

Overall, while major threats like flu and COVID-19 are easing, respiratory illness has not fully disappeared, with a mix of seasonal viruses still active across the country.
