Caitlin Dickerson’s journey from a curious but overlooked high school student to a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist is a story of persistence, passion and discovery. Arriving at Cal State Long Beach without a clear career path, she found direction through professors who challenged her to think critically and connect global issues to real-world events. Her interest in International Studies sparked a deeper curiosity about how stories are told, ultimately leading her to journalism.
Through internships and hands-on learning, Dickerson developed her craft by closely studying experienced reporters and immersing herself in the work. She went on to build a career in top newsrooms, becoming known for tackling complex, underreported issues. Her investigative reporting on U.S. immigration policy, including family separations at the border, earned her the Pulitzer Prize and solidified her reputation as a leading voice in the field.

Despite entering the industry without connections, Dickerson’s dedication and instinct to pursue meaningful stories guided her success. Today, she continues her work as a journalist and author, encouraging others to follow paths that feel purposeful and engaging.
