Ben Sasse: Keep Cameras Out of the Supreme Court
In his latest Free Expression column for The Wall Street Journal, former U.S. Senator and university president Ben Sasse argues against placing television cameras inside the Supreme Court. Sasse contends that cameras fundamentally change behavior, encouraging performance and political spectacle rather than thoughtful deliberation. Drawing comparisons to today’s televised congressional hearings, he warns that cameras would further politicize the Court, incentivize partisan theatrics, and undermine public trust in one of America’s most important institutions. While acknowledging calls for greater transparency, Sasse maintains that the Court is already extensively covered by the media and that preserving judicial independence requires resisting the pressures of the modern attention economy.
