Sanjay Gupta: Eat Like the World’s Longest-Living People

Blue Zone Breakfast
June 26, 2026

From WWSG exclusive thought leader, Dr. Sanjay Gupta:

In trying to find the secrets of living well, researchers like my friend Dan Buettner have often looked to where longevity seems like a natural way of life. These so-called “blue zones” are places and cultures that have a high concentration of centenarians, like Sardinia, Italy, or Okinawa, Japan. And what these places all seem to share is an emphasis on social connection, healthy eating and movement.

From studying and reporting on these areas throughout my career, I’ve incorporated a number of their lessons on how to eat into my own life.

The first lesson that I’ve adopted is the phrase: “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.” Studies have found that front-loading the day with good nutrients helps keep us from reaching for junk foods that do little to fuel the body and the brain later in the day.

And a “king’s meal” in many of these places isn’t a plate of eggs and bacon. Instead, diets in blue zones tend to incorporate plant-based proteins along with complex carbohydrates like beans and rice, as well as plant-based fats like nuts and seeds. In many blue zones, it means a savory bowl of soup instead of pancakes for breakfast. If I’m craving something sweet in the morning, I’ll reach for a bowl of oatmeal with a handful of blueberries.

Another lesson I’ve adopted from the blue zones is the Japanese phrase hara hachi bu. It essentially translates to: “Push the plate away when you’re 80% full.” So I don’t eat with a goal of trying to be full, but rather to be satisfied. Remember, it takes about 15 minutes for your stomach to catch up with your brain and realize you’ve had enough to eat. You can eat a three-course meal in 15 minutes  so instead of helping yourself to another serving, pause and wait.

These lessons may be common in blue zones, but we can all incorporate them into our lives.
