Bringing Home the Gold -- Again

Beach Volleyball champion Misty May-Treanor and partner Kerri Walsh captured their second Olympic Gold Medal at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and became the first team ever to repeat as back-to-back champs. The victory also marked their 108th straight match win. Misty and Kerri were distinguished as AVP Team of the Year for four consecutive years (2003 through 2006). Misty was also named Most Valuable Player in 2005-07, Best Offensive Player in 2004-07, and Best Defensive Player in 2006 and 2007. She is the first and only woman besides Walsh to reach 100 tournament victories and currently has the most wins of any female to ever play the sport.

Always Reaching for the Stars

Upon her return from the Beijing Games, Misty gladly accepted a role on ABC's hit-show Dancing with the Stars. She even pulled double duty: she and Kerri captured the Manhattan Beach Open for the fourth straight year and were crowned AVP Crocs Cup Champions for the third straight year, all while Misty continued with her duties on Dancing with the Stars. Misty was one of the rising talents of the show until an Achilles injury derailed her shot at the trophy. After undergoing successful surgery, Misty now looks forward to getting ready for the 2009 AVP season as well as a possible return to Dancing with the Stars.

SPEAKER TOPIC DESCRIPTIONS    (+/-)

Commitment

After performing at a high level over time, it is human nature to hit "cruise control" and let complacency begin to take hold.  Understanding that it is our overall "body of work" that matters most, not a singular accomplishment, we can divide and conquer.

Teamwork

Whether we like it or not, our fate (i.e. success or failure) is inextricably linked to the people with whom we surround ourselves.  Being on a team has a great deal to do with recognizing your own strengths and weaknesses.  Determining when the team needs you to lead and when the team needs you to support is a critical component of collaboration.

Communication

Every person reacts to stress and adversity differently.  Some get loud, some become reserved, others fly-off-the-handle.  However, great leaders and teammates understand that solid, positive communication during downtimes can be the difference between success and failure.  Our words and actions matter, especially under duress.
