The First to Analyze Global Environmental Issues

In 1974, with support of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Lester Brown founded the Worldwatch Institute, the first research institute devoted to the analysis of global environmental issues. While there he launched the Worldwatch Papers, the annual State of the World reports, World Watch magazine, a second annual entitled Vital Signs: The Trends That are Shaping Our Future, and the Environmental Alert book series.  In May 2001, he founded the Earth Policy Institute to provide a vision and a road map for achieving an environmentally sustainable economy. Plan B: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble

Our world is in peril and the decline is accelerating.  Is there anything we can do to address it? Plan B is a comprehensive plan for reversing the trends that are fast undermining our future. Its four overriding goals are to stabilize climate, stabilize population, eradicate poverty, and restore the earth's damaged ecosystems.  Part of this plan is an all-out effort to cut carbon emissions 80 percent by 2020. Plan B is a worldwide mobilization to raise energy efficiency in every sector of the economy, including buildings, lighting, heating and cooling, and transportation. It calls for harnessing the earth's renewable sources of energy through ambitiously exploiting the earth's solar, wind, and geothermal energy sources-and shows it is doable with existing technologies. Brown will take audiences on this journey and demonstrate that, in fact, we can stop this life-threatening decline and preserve our earth for generations to come.

The New Energy Economy

As fossil fuel prices rise, oil insecurity deepens, and concerns about climate change cast a shadow over the future of coal, a new energy economy is emerging in the United States. The old energy economy, fueled by oil, coal, and natural gas, is being replaced by one powered by wind, solar, and geothermal energy. The transition is moving at a pace and on a scale that we could not have imagined even a year ago.  Learn what this new energy economy entails and if it can be our legacy to the next generation in this illuminating vision provided by Brown.
