ABOUT Dave Barry   (+/-)

Legendary Humorist

For over 30 years, Dave Barry authored a syndicated weekly column that generated a loyal fan following for his perspectives and explanations on the absurdities of daily life.  His literary career took off when Miami Herald Magazine editors took note of his writing for a small community newspaper in suburban Philadelphia.  After a year of writing freelance columns for the magazine, Barry joined The Herald full-time in 1983.  Almost immediately, Barry made his name with wickedly funny and insightful observations on life in general and Miami in particular, helping define Miami's image as "a peninsular paragon of the peculiar."

Talented Entertainer and Performer

Retired from his weekly column, Barry now concentrates on his book and screenplay writing as well as annual projects such as "The Holiday Gift Guide" and "Year in Review" features that appear in newspapers nationwide.  In addition to several film adaptations, two of his books were used as the basis for the CBS TV sitcom Dave's World, in which Harry Anderson played Barry.  A true Renaissance man, Barry also plays lead guitar in a literary rock band called the Rock Bottom Remainders, whose other members include Stephen King, Amy Tan, Ridley Pearson and Mitch Albom.  He has made many TV appearances, including an infamous one on the David Letterman show where he proved that it is possible to set fire to a pair of men's underpants with a Barbie doll.
